Digital Lineart Tutorial by Tetiel Digital Lineart Tutorial by Tetiel
Ummmm... can someone first off let me know how to put a preview image on this? ^^; I don't see any options for it unless I'm submitting a non image v_v

Anyways some have requested a complete lineart tutorial. I think I covered just about everything. I probably don't have the best technique but ummm I try :D I know there's probably a gazzillion tuts out there like this but what's one more, eh?

Oh, and let me know if you still need clarification on some things :)

And before I forget! The character I drew is by :iconmeiken:

I use the pen tool to make lineart, but all my lines look the same.
How do you add pressure to your lines so that it can be bolder than softer?

When you open the Stroke Path... dialog box (with pen tool), there'll be an option saying 'Simulate Pressure'. Tick it. This will keep the line width bold along the middle (depending on your current brush size) whilst gradually thinning out along to the end points smoothly.

great tutorial, but when you have tablet you can just draw it, it's faster:)

I tend to disagree. I have one and I still use this method. If I have anatomy errors, it's easier for me to manipulate and change it. Plus, I have shaky hands so the lines don't look as clean xD

It may be true but -with full respect for you opinion- I have a shaky hand as well (I used to), but if you practice, your lines will be as smooth as pen tool; anyway, to be honest with you I still use pen tool because I need more practice to be able to control my muscles and draw straight smooth lines.

Hey ! First, thank you so much for this tutorial. :) But I have a problem... I have tried to find a solution by myself, but it gets on my nerves ! xD Actually, the option "Simulate pressure" doesn't work... and I don't know why. I have tried to change many things, but nothing works, the line remain the same. I hope my english isn't as bad as I think it may be...
I'm looking forward for your answer ! I hope there is a solution. ^^'

Hmmm... I haven't had that problem yet. Can you do me a favor and give me a screenshot of your brush settings? When you have the brush tool selected, it's that little file folder icon on the top bar, towards the right in the center. You may not have "shape dynamics" on.

I would like to apologize for for bothering you. ^^' [I hope my english is not as bad as I think it must be xD] Because I have eventually found a solution, I have reset my brushes, and now, it works. :) By the way thank you so much for your tutorial, I have just finished to "clean" a sketch thanks to your tutorial. :)

[Oh my god, my english is pathetic, I'm ashamed xD ... I hope it's at least understandable]

I wonder, how did you make the base of the whole thing?

:icontetiel:

Ohhhhh you mean sketching? I use a brush usually 1 px at the time since I didn't have pen sensitivity on my tablet. Now I use 4 px but it depends on the size of the canvas I guess? My sketch processes are sometimes really long because I have trouble with anatomy so I use a lot of references. Kinda frustrating, really. Now, I find it easier to actually correct my anatomy sometimes in the actual lineart phase since moving paths to the correct place is sometimes easier than drawing especially when you just feel you can't do it right.

So yeah, is that what you meant or did I wall of text for no reason ^^;

Sorry, but you wrote all that information for nothing, but thankyou anyways! =D

what i meant is how you make the base of the whole thing, not the picture; but the "thing" you wrote and put all the pictures on......i hope i am clear enough XD

I didn't know about stroking the path by right-clicking! I always used the edit: stroke, or the little circle button. And neither of those have the simulate pressure option. Something new; thanks for posting!

I was still doing path-based lineart, but making due with little variation in the width other than using differently shaped brushes. But I love the effect of the fading pressure, and I'm looking forward to using it!

I'm having some problems with my tablet. I bought it really expensive because I didn't want to skimp on quality. It's supposed to have over 600 different pressure sensitivity levels, but it doesn't work right, and the lines are always the same, no matter what.
What can I do to change the line weight???

I'm using Corel Painter 11
It came included with the tablet, as well as Corel Photoimpact 12.
Corel Painter is supposed to be pressure sensitive.... TT_TT
I don't really like the software too much because there are wayyyyy too many tools and settings to choose from, and the pen tool doesn't work right(it's almost impossible to use. It's just...UGH! ). I need a program with a good pen tool( I have rather shaky hands, so I'm not too good with traditional line art(, but I want to find something free, seeing as I'm broke. However, that's not going too well....
